It is very difficult to inflate a tire without an air pump and a good number of them have creative answers for the same. One of the alternatives is to use a CO2 inflator, which works on the same principle as that of a bicycle inflator releasing a burst of gas to inflate the tire quickly. These methods might not give you the result you see in normal conditions but will definitely get you through the emergency.
Here’s ways to inflate a tire without a air pump,
- Using CO2 inflator
They are used for both bicycle repairs and horizontally oriented motorcycle or small vehicle emergencies. They are very lightweight, as well as portable, and generally refer to inflating mechanisms that operate on small, disposable cartridges of compressed CO2 to inflate a tire quickly. For use, simply attach the inflator to the valve stem and activate the release mechanism, causing CO₂ to inflate the tire. CO2 cartridges are specifically designed for single use, but they are very handy and easy to transport and use in emergencies.
- Burst Inflation or Fire Method
The fire method is one way of installing tubeless tires without facing the problem of inflation. This is a pretty hazardous method, so if you want to apply it, be ready to use some incomplete sources of inflating air pressure. Actually, all you need is a small amount of lighter fluid or aerosol, which you can light up. The explosion forces the tire bead to sit on the rim, and only partial inflation is applied, yet it is enough to barely create the combustion weight. For example, most rapid expansion of gas, or the combustion, turns out to be the pressure needed to push in the beads.
Caution: This procedure is very dangerous-practically risky-and should be available only in emergencies. Improper handling can result in severe injuries or damage to the tire or sometimes even fires. Always take extreme precautions and, if in any possibility, seek the help of professionals.
- Plastic Bag and compression technique
The plastic bag approach is a simple way to inflate small size tires without having to use conventional air pumps. This technique employs an airtight plastic bag covering the valve stem and then securely sealing the foot end. Thereafter, repeatedly push down the bag; each trap would send air into the tire. Clearly, this needs patience because it is not very effective for fully inflating a tire but would still probably provide enough air for partially inflating it in emergency situations.
Note: This principle is applicable to small-size tires and will not work on a larger motorcycle or vehicle tire.
- Blowing air by mouth
This is the very first method of inflating a tire through the mouth and can be successfully used only on small types of tires. Examples of small tires are those found on bicycles or scooters. You can insert your mouth directly on the valve stem or use a piece of tubing to make it easier. Much air can be added this way, but it really takes a lot of effort for limited pressure. Best suited for an emergency type of minor inflation when there are no other tools available for use. This cannot be used in larger motorcycle or vehicle tires as they contain more air.
- Using Vacuum cleaner
A vacuum, as with reverse airflow or even a leaf blower, can be used in an emergency as an improvised air pump. Attach the hose securely to the tire valve and push it into the tire to force air into it. Although they aren’t designed to pump air at such high pressures as would be found in conventional air pumps, both devices can pump an air fill sufficient to inflate the tire just enough to get you on your way. This sort of system is valuable because it allows you to continue your journey even if little emergency measures have to be taken in cases where no more proper pump is available.
- Using a soda bottle or ballon
You can use soda bottles or balloons as an emergency air reservoir for inflating tires. Inflate the balloon or pressurize the soda bottle using one’s mouth or any other air-pump-like method to fill it. Release air from the balloon or bottle so as to push it through the valve into the tire when needed. Not that this gives very little air, just enough to get you through an emergency, but requires some creativity and great patience, as it is not nearly as effective or efficient as a proper air pump.
